CHPAMS Member's Updates

Dr. Winnie Chi-Man Yip, a member of CHPAMS Advisory Committee, was appointed as Professor of the Practice of Global Health Policy and Economics, effective September 1, 2016 , with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Dr. Yip will also serve as Director of the China Health Partnership, with the vision to strengthen and expand research and training programs in Chinese health systems and policy. Big congratulations to Professor Yip!

CHPAMS member and Board Director Dr. Liang Wang, an Assistant Professor at College of Public Health, East Tennessee University, is serving President of International Chinese Nutrition Young Scholar Network (ICNYSN). It is a new organization established on May 31st 2016, which consists of global Chinese young scholars, practitioners, entrepreneurs and students in Nutrition Science and Healthcare field. The purpose of building this network is to promote the development of young scholars’ career and innovative nutritional projects through communication, learning, training and multi-disciplinary cooperation, and eventually help improving public health both in China and globally. CHPAMS member Dr. Youfa Wang, Professor at School of Public Health and Health Professionals, University of Buffalo, The State University of New York, serves as chair of advisory board committee. Until September 2016, there are about 700 members worldwide.

2. CHPAMS Calls for Institutional Membership

Institutional membership is designed to recognize the shared value and vision between CHPAMS and institutional members to promote health and health equity in China or among Chinese population. CHPAMS will assist the members with developing, supporting and sustaining their institutional activity, such as recommending speakers, hosting visiting scholars, and organizing research webinars. 3.      Call for Nominations: CHPAMS Inspiration Award

CHPAMS Inspiration award is to recognize CHPAMS member’s determination to overcome significant barriers and achieve the beyond-expectation accomplishment in scientific research, community services, or innovative activities. Interested members can visit www.chpams.org for more details. Qualified members should send an application letter with no more than 1,000 words to Dr. Zhuo (Adam) Chen (zchen@chpams.org) by October 1, 2016. The winner will receive $500 at minimum level and an award plaque. 

4.      "Members' Corner" section aims to feature and promote the accomplishments from our members. If you have new publications or awards that would like to share with peer members, please let us know at newsletter@chpams.org.

CHPAMS Activities

1.     New Board of Directors (2016- 2018):

CHPAMS has successfully completed our election for the 2016-2018 Board of Directors (BOD). While we transition to the new BOD, we want to thank the outgoing initial BOD (2014-2016). Under the leadership of the initial BOD, CHPAMS had many accomplishments, such as its incorporation as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the first CHPAMS Conference, the monthly newsletter "CHPAMS Monthly", the Jump-start Your Career Webinar series, contributions to West Lake Forum and Youth Forum, and numerous receptions and outreaches at various conferences and meetings. The term for the new BOD started on July 1, 2016 and will end on June 30, 2018. We look forward to more growth and development under the new leadership! 

2.     CHPAMS' participation in Westlake Youth Forum (Chengdu) on June 21-23, 2016. 

The Westlake Youth Forum is sponsored by China Medical Board and organized by Sichuan University to promote junior scholars' training in health policy and systems sciences and career development. CHPAMS sent seven overseas members to participate in the Forum. Drs. Lincoln Chen, Hai Yu, and Gordon Liu were recognized for their significant contributions and continuous support for CHPAMS, and mentoring of junior scholars in public health and health policy. CHPAMS hosted a membership reunion on June 21.

CHPAMS Activities and Announcement

1.      The Board Passed the Policy on Inspiration Award

This award is to recognize individual member’s determination to overcome significant barriers and achieve the beyond-expectation accomplishment in scientific research, community service, or innovative activities. The nominee should email the following documents to the Chair of the award committee by October 1. CHPAMS will announce the winner on February 1 of the following year. The winner will receive $500 at minimum level and an award plaque. The award amount will increase with more endowment and sponsorship.

2.      CHPAMS Reception at Westlake Conference in Chengdu

CHPAMS cordially invites our members in Chengdu to attend the reunion at Westlake Conference.

CHPAMS Activities and Announcement

1st CHPAMS & China Health Review Conference Completed in Atlanta, USA

CHPAMS successfully hosted its 1st conference in Atlanta, USA on May 13-15. The three-day conference provided ample learning opportunities for attending members. Dr. Jeffrey Koplan, CHPAMS Advisor and Vice President for Global Health at Emory University, delivered the keynote speech. Members actively participated in sessions on scientific research, career development, academic publication, and team building events. With attending members' open vote, Dr. Xi Chen from Yale University won the best abstract award and five students received travel awards. Transition ceremony was conducted between Dr. Qi (Harry) Zhang (CHPAMS President, 2014-16) and Dr. Zhuo (Adam) Chen, (CHPAMS President, 2016-18). All conference logistics were provided by volunteering members and CHPAMS thanks them for their excellent services!

CHPAMS has successfully completed our first election for the new Board of Directors (2016-2018). 1. "Bridging the Minds in Health Policy" 1st Conference of CHPAMS and China Health Review (CHR) in Atlanta on May 13-14, 2016.

Purpose: This conference aims to bridge the innovative minds within CHPAMS across disciplines related to health policy. Scientific and professional development sessions will help members establish professional networks. The Board of Directors of CHPAMS and Editorial Board of CHR will host business meetings and communicate with engaged members to promote the organization and the journal to a new stage. 

Keynote Speaker: Jeffrey P. Koplan, MD, MPH, CHPAMS Advisor, Vice President for Global Health at Emory University, Former Director of US CDC.

2. The China Medical Board invites young investigators from Chinese Universities for a sixth annual round of proposal submissions for the CMB Open Competition (CMB-OC) research program in the field of Health Policy and System Science (HPS). This year’s OC program will prioritize project submissions that seek to advance quality with equity in China’s health system. Projects that aim to improve the quality and equity of health care system in China will receive higher priority than other themes. Eligible applicants for 2016 exclude OC winners in 2015, 2014, and 2013. If interested, please submit your abstract to lzhou@cmbfound.org before the deadline of Apr 15th. 3.      2016 Board of Directors Nomination is Open.

Based on the bylaws, the current board of directors' term will end on June 30, 2016. Nomination is open for all members who registered on www.chpams.org. The board has appointed Qi (Harry) Zhang, Zhuo (Adam) Chen, and Dong (Roman) Xu to form the nomination committee, who will answer any inquiries about the process. The deadline for nomination is March 1.

4.      The Board Passed the Polices on Conflict of Interests.

The new policy will require any directors with potential conflict of interests to disclose and excuse themselves from the decision of any financial agreement with the third party. For more details, please visit here.

CHPAMS Volunteer of the Year Award 2015

CHPAMS is run by many volunteers who are the cornerstone of the organization. Each year, CHPAMS honors 1~3 individuals through the Volunteer of the Year Award. For 2015, the Award goes to Ms. Cuiwen (Cynthia) Liu for her excellent contributions on a variety of CHPAMS activities and tasks, including Jump Start Your Careers webinars, event reports, membership database, and China Health Review.

Ms. Cuiwen (Cynthia) Liu has a master degree in Health Management and Policy from the University of Michigan and is a Strategy and Operation consultant at the Deloitte Consulting in Chicago, serving healthcare providers, payers and life sciences companies.  Before graduate school, she studied finance and economics in Fudan University and worked as a business analyst of financial industries in China.

1.      CHPAMS Participation at International Health Economics Association (iHEA) 2015 World Congress

The China Health Policy and Management Society (CHPAMS) and its members actively participated in the International Health Economics Association (iHEA) 11th World Congress in Milan, Italy on July 13-15, 2015. CHPAMS was highlighted as one of the premier Chinese organizations in the Congress' brochure. CHPAMS members contributed to the biennial conference as scientific committee members, session chairs, and presenters. CHPAMS also hosted a reception for attending members with a memorable reunion in the summer of Milan.

2.   Jump-start Your Career Webinar Review Videos

In summer 2015, CHPAMS initiated a career development webinar series, “Jump-start Your Career”, to bridge academic institutes in China and public health professionals all over the globe via online conference platform.  This series has successfully launched two events for four top universities: Shandong University, Peking University, Zhejiang University and Fudan University.   For highlights on these events, please visit CHPAMS video channels on Youtube or Youku to watch the review video (~2 min) of each Jump-start Your Career Webinar.

CHPAMS successfully hosted the 2nd Jump-start Your Career Webinar on June 30, 2015. The following speakers from Zhejiang University and Fudan University introduced their institutions, job opportunities, benefits, etc. Several young faculties from each institution described their experience and lives as young professionals. The speakers interacted with CHPAMS members and answered questions from the participants during the live event. 2.      WESTLAKE YOUTH FORUM II

China Medical Board (CMB), Zhejiang University School of Medicine, and CHPAMS co-hosted the second Westlake Youth Forum on June 15-18, 2015 in Hangzhou, China. The forum attracted over 50 attendees, including selected CHPAMS voting/registered members with generous support from CMB. CHPAMS worked closely with the other organizers in the fellowship selection, event planning and coordination. During the forum, CHPAMS also held its own member-only session on June 16.  The Westlake Youth Forum provided excellent educational and networking opportunities to junior public health and health policy scholars.

3.      CHPAMS SESSIONS IN THE CHINESE ECONOMISTS SOCIETY 2015 MEETING

The China Health Policy and Management Society (CHPAMS) and its members actively participated in the Chinese Economists Society (CES) 2015 Conference co-organized by Chongqing University on June 13-14, 2015. Under the overarching theme: In the Context of “New Normal” Theory: Deepen the Comprehensive Reform in China, CHPAMS also organized a session on June 13, 2015.  CHPAMS members contributed as session chairs, moderators and panelists in several sessions. Dr. Qi (Harry) Zhang chaired a round table forum on the aging population needs and health reform on June 14. Dr. Gordon Liu and Dr. Shuanglin Lin from Peking University, Dr. Yinyao Chen from Fudan University, and Dr. Hengjin Dong from Zhejiang University delivered excellent speeches on this roundtable and received warm responses from the audience.

CHPAMS was also proud to witness several members being recognized for their achievement: HUANG Wei (Best CES Economics Student Award), HE Guojun (Gregory Chow Best Paper Award), Qi (Harry) Zhang, Best Service Award. Congratulations to the awards winners!

4.      CHPAMS RECEPTION AT ACADEMYHEALTH ANNUAL RESEARCH MEETING 2015

CHPAMS held a reception at the 2015 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting (ARM) on June 15, 2015 in Minneapolis, MN. Approximately 20 current and new CHPAMS members participated and enjoyed the gathering. This social event provided a delightful opportunity for Chinese researchers from all around the world to exchange ideas and network with colleagues.

·         CHPAMS Conference Reception for Members

A CHPAMS reception, organized by Dr. Lizheng Shi, was held at the 2015 ISPOR Annual International Meeting in Philadelphia, PA on May 19th. The reception achieved big success to host approximately 40 Chinese scholars in academia, government and industry from China, Singapore and the US. A Wechat group was created with over 150 members joined after the reception. The ISPOR reception provided an excellent opportunity to network with current members and welcome new members.

The study was funded by multiple institutes including Chinese National Natural Science Foundation, Ministry of Health and Shanghai Municipal Committee of Education. Big congratulations to Donglan! 

·         CHPAMS member Yanfang Su, PhD candidate at Harvard School of Public Health, recently published two manuscripts in collaboration with School of Public Policy and Administration, Xi’an Jiaotong University:  “The impact of China’s Zero-Markup Drug Policy on county hospital revenue and government subsidy levels” at Journal of Asian Public Policy and “The financial impact of the 'Zero-markup Policy for Essential Drugs' on patients in county hospitals in western rural China” at journal PLOS ONE. The study was funded by National Natural Science Fund of China, Shaanxi Social Science Fund and China Medical Board (CMB). Big congratulations to Yanfang!

To promote health economics research among junior researchers, we will organize multiple CHPAMS Forums at Chinese Economist Society (CES) Annual Meeting in Chongqing, China on June 13-14. For more details about the conference, please visit http://www.china-ces.org/.

For accepted papers, CHPAMS will provide $300-$500 per session to cover presenters' conference-related expenses depending on number of registered CHPAMS members in each session and the relevance of the theme to CHPAMS' mission and vision.

The participants still need to submit the abstracts through CES regular channel separately. Please make a reference of "CHPAMS Forum" in the comments section of the CES submission. University at Buffalo Obesity Research Team, headed by epidemiologist and childhood obesity expert Dr. Youfa Wang, partners with NASA to Design, Implement, and Evaluate Global Obesity Prevention Programs. [Link]

Dr. Liang Wang, in the East Tennessee State University College of Public Health published a new study that identified the risk factors for adolescent obesity in southern Appalachia.   The article “Prevalence of and Risk Factors for Adolescent Obesity in Southern Appalachia, 2012” was published in the journal Preventing Chronic Disease. [Link]

Call for Papers, Special issue of Nutrition Discovery on Non-communicable Chronic Diseases (NCDs)

The Nutrition Discovery is planning a special issue for non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs). Manuscripts of original research articles (text <3000 words), review articles (<4000 words), and brief reports (<1500 words) are invited for review in all aspects of the NCDs including cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases (such as chronic obstructed pulmonary disease and asthma), and mental health disorders that are related to nutrition.

Submissions are due by February 28, 2015, using the online submission system at http://www.nutr-discovery.com/submitarticle.asp.  Please review the Nutrition Discovery website at http://www.nutr-discovery.com/ for submission guidelines. Call for Papers - Kunshan Forum

The Globle Health Research Center of Duke Kunshan University will hold the 1st Kunshan Forum on May 29-30, 2015. The main theme of the conference is on Non-communicable Diseases and Health System Reforms in China. The deadline to submit the abstract of a research article is March 31, 2015. The Forum will select 40 to 50 papers for an oral presentation at the concurrent sessions. The time length of each concurrent session is 90 minutes and each session will have three paper presentations by authors and comments by three discussants. The empirical studies using data obtained from China will be given priority, but other empirical studies using data from other countries with relevant policy implications for China are also encouraged to submit. Young researchers are especially encouraged to apply. No poster presentation will be accepted. The abstracts (in English) have to be sent to the following email address: chee.ruey.hsieh@duke.edu

Call for Papers - Health Care Governance Forum 2015 – integrated prevention and management of diabetes in primary care settings (2015 健康治理论坛-基层糖尿病的综合防治与管理)

The main theme of the conference is on the integrated prevention and management of diabetes, conducting research from perspectives of economics, management science, clinical medicine and sociology to address challenges of diabetes management. The deadline to submit a research article is February 15, 2015. Dr. Ning Yi will attend the conference as CHPAMS representative.
